ior to holding its Financial Analyst Day in New York City, AMD showed off some new CrossFire-related technology to a few select members of the press. What we saw was AMD’s Hybrid CrossFire and its associated hardware, which marries next-generation integrated graphics processors (IGP) and entry-level discreet graphics cards for increased performance and functionality. Please note, however, that “Hybrid CrossFire” may not be the official name of this platform when it is made available sometime in early to mid Q108.

If you’re a regular reader of HotHardware, you already know what CrossFire is and how it works, so we won’t go into detail again here. Where Hybrid CrossFire differs from traditional CrossFire is that only a single, discreet graphics card is required for it to work. So, how is it CrossFire with only one graphics card? Let us explain.

AMD’s next generation entry-level graphics cards based on the ATI RV620 GPU architecture, which will be part of the Radeon HD 3400 series when they officially launch, work in conjunction with the GPU integrated into AMD’s upcoming RS780 chipset in CrossFire mode. Just think of the IGP as the second graphics card.

The RS780 series of chipsets will be comprised of multiple SKUs, each with somewhat different feature sets. The IGP in the RS780 is essentially unchanged from the Radeon HD 2400. It will have the same features as a discreet HD 2400 series card, like being able to power dual independent displays and accelerating HD video, and according to current data the RS780’s IGP will offer roughly 3X - 4X the 3D performance of the current 6-series chipsets. We should also note that some RS780 implementations will feature an on-board frame buffer, ranging in size from 16MB to 128MB, dubbed “Sideport”. RS780 boards are expected to be priced in the $70 to $110 range depending on the feature set and particular IGP implementation (some with feature HD video acceleration, others will not). They will also be the first motherboards to feature the upcoming SB700 southbridge.

    AMD's Hybrid CrossFire Prototype System

The Radeon HD 3400 series of cards – the Radeon HD 3450 and HD 3470 initially – will have similar configurations to the current 2400 series, but they will be updated with support for DX10.1 and PCI Express 2.0, just like the HD 3800 series. Displayport will also be coming to the some Radeon 3400 series cards in the future, as we’ve already shown. Radeon HD 3400 series cards are expected to be price from about $50 and up.

What this all means is that for around $150 or less, users will be able to purchase a platform that could power four displays, accelerate HD video, and actually play current DX10 games. We saw a system up and running with an RS780 motherboard, a Radeon HD 3450, and a 2.2GHz Phenom 9500 processor, and even with the early state of the drivers and hardware, it was able to play Call of Duty 4 at over 30FPS at 1024x768 with just the IGP, and in Hybrid CrossFire mode performance jumped to over 50FPS. We also saw Unreal Tournament 3 running on the same system. With the IGP alone, UT3 ran at about 27FPS at 1024x768 and scaled to 45FPS in Hybrid CrossFire mode. That’s very strong performance for an IGP, especially considering the games had perfect image quality. Some current IGPs don’t render cutting edge games with very good image quality, if they can run them at all.

Hybrid CrossFire isn’t just about performance though. The platform’s power profile should also be interesting if everything goes according to plan. You see, when the IGP is used to power the display and a 3D application isn’t running, the discreet graphics card can be almost totally shut down, which will reduce power consumption. And the chipset itself is said to consume a maximum of only around 20W.

We should have production level hardware to test Hybrid CrossFire in the coming weeks (if that’s what it ends up being named). When that time comes, we’ll be sure to update you all with full performance and power consumption data. For now, rest assured that tomorrow’s next-gen IGPs are going to be much more interesting than you may think.

    Another Key Executive Left AMD/ATI
Seems like another key executive from the AMD graphics department has left too to take up a post at another company, according to an official press release from AMD. Victor Peng, is the VP of Silicon Engineering in the Graphics Products Group (GPG) at AMD. He was previously from ATI Technologies prior to the AMD's acquisition as the VP of Discrete Graphics Engineering. Victor Peng is the second executive from AMD GPG who has left this week. The first executive who left this week reported earlier is Vijay Sharma, the Director of Product Marketing. This gave some indications that more resignations might be coming. Also, we heard many former ATI engineers have joined the Intel Visual Computing after the acquisition.

    Lasso se vrací

    http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?op...7387&Itemid=34

    Finally, an external graphics card

Do you still remember Asus' attempt at making an external graphics card? After a lot of noise last year, Asus went all quiet on that front and it doesn’t look that it will ever succeed in launching a product. It was a nice attention magnet on many trade shows. The Asus XG station is a dead concept as the PC-card slot was never good enough for graphics, at least this is what we’ve heard from some engineering sources.

We’ve learned that ATI plans to reveal its external graphics card based on the RV670 chip and the product itself is codenamed Lasso. There was a lot of talk about it last year, but we guess ATI changed its mind and concept and it is ready to launch it now at the time of Puma.

We will have to disappoint many of you, as Lasso will need a custom, and yet very fast connector in order to work; and legacy notebooks that are out today won’t be able to cope with it.

Lasso will launch together with notebooks that will support this concept and it will be marketed as the right solution for the graphics performance option for future notebooks.

ATI will showcase this technology around Computex time, but its still unclear when it will officially launch. We suspect that it will be ready for back to school (by late July to August time).

AMD (NYSE:AMD - News) today announced the first commercial implementation of Graphics Double Data Rate, version 5 (GDDR5) memory in its forthcoming next generation of ATI Radeon™ graphics card products. The high-speed, high-bandwidth GDDR5 technology is expected to become the new memory standard in the industry, and that same performance and bandwidth is a key enabler of The Ultimate Visual Experience™, unlocking new GPU capabilities. AMD is working with a number of leading memory providers, including Samsung, Hynix and Qimonda, to bring GDDR5 to market.

Today’s GPU performance is limited by the rate at which data can be moved on and off the graphics chip, which in turn is limited by the memory interface width and die size. The higher data rates supported by GDDR5 – up to 5x that of GDDR3 and 4x that of GDDR4 – enable more bandwidth over a narrower memory interface, which can translate into superior performance delivered from smaller, more cost-effective chips.1 AMD’s senior engineers worked closely with industry standards body JEDEC in developing the new memory technology and defining the GDDR5 spec.

“The days of monolithic mega-chips are gone. Being first to market with GDDR in our next-generation architecture, AMD is able to deliver incredible performance using more cost-effective GPUs,” said Rick Bergman, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Graphics Product Group, AMD. “AMD believes that GDDR5 is the optimal way to drive performance gains while being mindful of power consumption. We’re excited about the potential GDDR5 brings to the table for innovative game development and even more exciting game play.”

The introduction of GDDR5-based GPU offerings marks the continued tradition of technology leadership in graphics for AMD. Most recently, AMD has been first to bring a unified shader architecture to market, the first to support Microsoft DirectX® 10.1 gaming, first to lower process nodes like 55nm, the first with integrated HDMI with audio, and the first with double-precision floating point calculation support.

AMD expects that PC graphics will benefit from the increase in memory bandwidth for a variety of intensive applications. PC gamers will have the potential to play at high resolutions and image quality settings, with superb overall gaming performance. PC applications will have the potential to benefit from fast load times, with superior responsiveness and multi-tasking.

“Qimonda has worked closely with AMD to ensure that GDDR5 is available in volume to best support AMD’s next-generation graphics products,” said Thomas Seifert, Chief Operating Officer of Qimonda AG. “Qimonda’s ability to quickly ramp production is a further milestone in our successful GDDR5 roadmap and underlines our predominant position as innovator and leader in the graphics DRAM market.”

    GDDR5 for Stream Processing

In addition to the potential for improved gaming and PC application performance, GDDR5 also holds a number of benefits for stream processing, where GPUs are applied to address complex, massively parallel calculations. Such calculations are prevalent in high-performance computing, financial and academic segments among others. AMD expects that the increased bandwidth of GDDR5 will greatly benefit certain classes of stream computations.

New error detection mechanisms in GDDR5 can also help increase the accuracy of calculations by indentifying errors and re-issuing commands to get valid data. This capability is a level of reliability not available with other GDDR-based memory solutions today.

Nvidia supports PhysX effort on ATI Radeon

Mountain House (CA) – You gotta love this industry. 12 days ago, we reported about a website making progress in getting Nvidia’s CUDA platform and PhysX to run on ATI Radeon cards, which Nvidia denied would be possible. Some even claimed that such a tool was a planned hoax. Now we are told that developer Eran Badit has not only been invited to join Nvidia’s developer program, but has also been offered hands-on help. Here is an update to a fascinating story that may soon bring PhysX support to your Radeon graphics card.
